The BBC Singers travel to Ireland on their concert tour with a programme of music fitting for Holy Week, visiting Drogheda, Galway and Dublin. The programme features a capella works by both Irish and British composers, including Benjamin Britten, Irene Buckley and John Tavener. Giving performances at a variety of churches and cathedrals across Ireland, the BBC Singers will showcase choral compositions inspired by religion, beginning with one of Britten’s most uplifting and joyful compositions – the Hymn to St Cecilia. The centrepiece is James MacMillan’s work Seven Last Words from the Cross, a searching and expressive work, both dramatic and reverential. Fergus Sheil, one of Ireland’s most prominent conductors, leads the BBC Singers and the Con Tempo String Quartet (Galway’s Ensemble in residence) for this concert.
